Through theoretically driven case studies, the research reported here considers the ways in which students in different social class settings are inducted into school knowledge. The paper brings to the centre the social class positioning of teachers in considering their role in schooling processes. The central question of the paper is whether the authors can establish a relationship between teachers' own social class backgrounds, their professional dispositions and their pedagogic practice.

This article introduces the concept of 'free spaces' as an important site for the development of theory and practice around youth activism, teacher development, and the transformation of public and private space in urban schools and communities. Nearly a quarter of a century ago, Evans and Boyte (1986) introduced the concept of 'free spaces' in their book: Free spaces: the sources of democratic change in America.

Student teachers explored their understanding of social class and underachievement, in this article which examined the issue of the social class attainment gap in education. The data collected revealed silence and resistance surrounding social class in educational contexts, and social class and underachievement were considered overlapping concepts by teachers' perceptions. The study aimed at preparing teachers to recognize and address barriers to education faced by underachieving working class pupils.
