The research is concerned with prospective teachers' conceptualizations of terms such as ‘disability’ and ‘special education’. Activity theory is proposed as a lens through which to consider the complexities involved. In the context of the English systems, this research, using data collected through word association and analyzed using activity theory, explored the trainees' conceptualizations.

In this study, the author examines the outcomes of the use of a project-based online Professional development (PD) approach with in-service teachers of K-12 students with disabilities. The findings from the qualitative study indicate that each of the four student participants improved in the area of performance that was targeted by the teachers' PD.

The Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act mandates that every student with an Individualized Education Program be considered for assistive technology (AT). As a result, future special educators need to have the knowledge and skills regarding AT. In this article, the authors carried out a national study of 160 special education teacher preparation programs using archival document analysis on the current practice of AT course delivery for the preparation of special educators.

Today's general and special educators must develop skills as collaborative educators to educate children with disabilities. This article explores this collaborative relationship, discusses implications for change in teacher preparation, and describes one teacher education seminar designed to provide prospective general and special educators with opportunities to practice essential skills of collaboration.

The article describes a project which aimed to explore the implementation of a new model of pedagogy to the education of severely disabled students. The study included an analysis of the development of communication skills relating to deep knowledge, deep understanding and high order thinking. The study results point at a pedagogy framework that can be applied to teach cognitive skills that are usually taught by teachers of normally developing students.
